Five School Records Broken at Indoor Nationals
The Chattahoochee Technical College Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track Teams completed the 2011 season at The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Indoor Track Meet at Texas Tech in Lubbuck on Friday March 4th and Saturday March 5th. The championships included 52 men’s teams and 55 women’s teams from across the country. This was the largest number of teams to ever compete in the indoor championships. The Golden Eagles had their biggest squad ever with 11 men and women competing in 13 events. Members of the team had to qualify for the championships during the regular season by either beating a national qualifying time/distance or by winning their event in a regional meet. On Friday, four school records were broken during the competition. Ioni Christian reset the school record in the 200 meter dash with a very strong 18th place finish with a time of 25.40. Earlier in the day, Ioni just missed breaking the school record, and just missed qualifying for finals in the 55 Meter dash with a time of 7.26, placing 14th. Jovelle Patterson shattered the school record in the 800 meter run in a fight to qualify for the finals. Her 2:19.95 time placed her 7th in the prelims which qualfied her for the finals on Saturday. Shauntia Molsey, although not breaking a school record, provided a strong performance in the long jump (5.44m 17-10.25) placing her 7th in the event, earning her a trip to the awards stand. Tami Gregory-McCain set a personal best season time in the 400 meter run (1:01.92) placing 15th. Linda Rongoey just missed her personal best time in the 800 meter run (2:45.82), placing 17th. Dierdre Duncan tossed the shot 10.82m (35-06.00) to place 20th. On the men’s team, Andrew Archer broke the school record in the 400M run in an attempt to qaulify for the finals. Although he did not make it to the finals, his efforts shattered the school record by ½ second (50.21) and earned him a 24th place finish. Donovan Miller shattered his previous best time of the season (1:58.80), just missing the school record, in an effort to make the finals. Donovan fell less than a second short of the finals, finishing 17th overall. Dwight Hartridge had a season best personal performance in the 400 meter run (50.71) finishing 27th. On Saturday, Shauntia Mosley broke the school record in the triple jump (11.13m 36-06.25) placing 12th overall. Jovelle Patterson got boxed in early in the 800 meter finals and did not have enough time to recover, finishing 9th overall (2:25.49). However, the 4 x 400 team (Mosley, Christian, Gregory-McCain, Patterson) ended the meet for the women on a very strong positive note. At the beginning of the race the Eagles lead the heat due to efforts by Shauntia Mosley and Ioni Christian. However, due to a messed up handoff the team fell behind after the first two legs. Tami Gregory-McCain made an excellent effort to recover some of the distance between CTC and the lead team. Jovelle Patterson took the batton on the achor leg and was determined to not let the team down. She quick caught the lead team, passed them, and left them far behind. She clocked a 57.5 400 meter time during her effort. The team shattered the school record (4:03.62) by five seconds placing 12th overall. On the men’s side, Antervious Crowder had a strong performance in the triple jump (12.86m 42-02.25) placing 18th overall. The men’s 4 x 400 team, after watching the women’s great effort put on a strong performance of their own. The men also had to recover from a messed up hand off during the race. Andrew Archer provided a strong effort during the last leg running a 49 second 400 meter split to give the Eagles a 16th finish in the event with a time of 3:23.52, just short of the school record set on a track outside last weekend. The 4 x 400 event concluded a very successful meet and very successful season for both teams. “Almost every member of the men’s and women’s team set personal season best performances during the meet,” according to Head Coach Steve Prettyman. “In addition five school records were broken during the meet. You can’t ask much more from a team. They had a great two days of competion. The efforts of both 4 x 400 teams really show that the CTC track teams will 100% effort to fight for a victory. Coach O’Brien and Coach Rhodes efforts in getting the relay teams ready for the national meet really paid off. We look forward to an exciting outdoor season!” The Outdoor Men’s and Women’s Teams will officially begin their seasons later this month at the Emory Classic Invitational in Atlanta on March 25th and 26th.
